Caring for Your Fresh Christmas Tree
A fresh Christmas tree needs just a little bit of care to stay beautiful throughout the holiday season. With proper watering and a few simple precautions, you can help keep your tree fresh while protecting it (and your ornaments) all season long.
Water your tree regularly. After bringing your tree home, give it a thorough watering with room-temperature water. Check the water level at least twice a week and refill the stand as needed. As a general guideline, a Christmas tree could require about one gallon of water per week, though the amount can vary depending on the size and type of tree as well as the dryness conditions in your home. Importantly, never allow the water reservoir in the stand to run completely dry.
Use a tree disposal bag. Before setting up your tree, place a tree bag at the base (easy to hide under a tree skirt). When the holidays are over, simply pull the bag up around the tree to make cleanup and disposal nice and simple.
Keep ornaments secure. If you have young children or pets, try tying up ornaments with twine or string instead of those traditional metal hooks to keep them from falling. Place fragile or valuable ornaments higher on the tree or on stronger internal branches, and keep the lower branches free of anything that could pose a hazard.
